3 Teas To Soothe Your Sore Throat

There are likely a number of illnesses that make their way around your retirement community during cold and flu season, any of which may be accompanied by a sore throat. If you wake up one day with that telltale scratch in your throat, there's not much you can do but wait for your cold to pass. However, there are a number of drinks that can help to ease the discomfort of a sore throat.

1. Licorice root tea
You'll definitely want to make the most of licorice root while you're sick, as it has impressive antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. The ingredient can help to reduce the swelling in your throat and minimize discomfort. You can buy licorice tea bags in the store, but this homemade version includes a few other cold-fighting ingredients that will help you feel better after just one cup.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry licorice root, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon chips
  • 2 Tbsp. whole cloves
  • 1/2 cup chamomile flowers
  • 1/4 cup dried orange peel

Directions
Mix the ingredients together and stir until well-combined. Place 3 heaping tablespoons of the mixture into a small saucepan, then cover with 2 1/2 cups water. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and allow the tea to simmer for 10 minutes. Strain out the tea mixture and pour your tea into a large mug. Feel free to sweeten with a little bit of honey, which can also help to soothe your ailment. Store the remaining mixture in an air-tight glass jar away from direct light.

2. Lemon ginger tea
If you're unable to find licorice root in your local market, this tea uses a number of ingredients that you likely have in your cupboard. The ginger and lemon pack a powerful punch by breaking down mucus, reducing swelling and boosting your immune system.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 slices peeled ginger
  • 1 chamomile tea bag
  • 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. honey

Directions
Place the ginger and tea bag into a mug, then fill with boiling water. Let the ingredients steep for five minutes, then remove tea bag. You can choose to let the ginger soak for longer, if desired. Otherwise, remove the slices from the water. Stir in the lemon juice and honey. Drink the tea while warm for optimal results.

3. Apple cider vinegar tea
This tea isn't made for soothing as much as it is for clearing out your sinuses in one fell swoop. After a glass of this apple cider vinegar tea, you'll have a clearer head and your sore throat will be a little less achy. However, don't underestimate how hot this recipe can be! If you don't like spicy foods, this remedy isn't the one for you.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 lemon wedge

Directions
Bring the water to a boil, then transfer into a mug. Stir in the vinegar, honey and pepper. Finally top of your drink with the juice from the lemon wedge. If your tea is too hot, take deep breaths of the steam while it cools. Once it's a comfy temperature, drink up! It may not taste great, but it will certainly help clear out the mucus that's clogging your throat and nasal passages.
