Meet the Sunrise of Leawood Team

Meet some of the excellent team members here at Sunrise of Leawood, KS.

Ryan Wrightleawood-ryan

Executive Director

"Hello my name is Ryan Wright and I am the Executive Director here at Sunrise of Leawood. I have been with Sunrise since 2016. I started as a Reminiscence Supervisor at Sunrise of Overland Park. After completing the Executive Director in Training program, I got the exciting opportunity to join the team at Sunrise of Leawood.

My favorite part about my job is the interactions I get to have every day with our residents, families, and team members. The best part of my job is bringing our Sunrise culture to our current and prospective residents. In my spare time, I enjoy going on hikes with my dogs, spending time with family, and being a full time taco enthusiast."

Michele Tonkin - Leawood DOS

Michele Tonkin

Director of Sales

“Before I knew about Sunrise, I served as my grandmother’s primary caregiver. I placed her in two different senior living communities in Johnson County before I finally found Sunrise. Had I known about Sunrise and the amazing people who work for this company, I would have initially placed her here. There is no comparison in our team members’ dedication to our principles of service and belief in our mission: to champion the quality of life for all seniors. I am proud to say I work at Sunrise!  I am grateful for the opportunity to bring more families to Sunrise on a daily basis.

Since joining the Sunrise team in 2014, I’ve enjoyed interacting with our residents the most. They have so much history to share, and I look forward to seeing each and every one of them daily. I love the Sunrise signatures….particularly our community dog, Duke!”

Kelly HandleyKelly Handley, MBA

Business Office Coordinator

“I have been with Sunrise of Leawood since September 2003. I started with Sunrise while our community was still in its pre-opening days, which means I watched the community being built from the ground up. This makes me the community historian!

I love all the tasks that my job entails, especially payroll, but my favorite Sunrise “job” is being Duke’s momma! I adopted Duke from Wayside Waifs in 2014 and he has been our community dog ever since. I have always been passionate about working with rescue animals.

The best part of working at Sunrise is getting to serve the greatest generation. Our residents have so much history, life stories, and a great deal of wisdom to pass onto us. One can truly learn so much from our seniors. In my spare time (which I rarely have any!) I love to cook and barbecue. Above all, nothing is more important to me than spending time with my family.”

Tim HodgsonTim Hodgson

Maintenance Coordinator

“I have been a part of the team at Sunrise of Leawood since 2017. Before working at Sunrise I owned my own home repair & remodeling business for 8 years, and have more than 15 additional years of experience working in the maintenance industry.

It is my job to ensure that all of the community facilities are running smoothly every day. My favorite part of the job is spending time with residents and getting to know them. I am thankful for the opportunity to work around our seniors who have so much wisdom and heritage to share with us. When I am not at Sunrise of Leawood I enjoy spending time with my family, watching sports, and participating in outdoor activities. I am also an avid member of my church choir and have always had a passion for music.”

House Dog

Duke is our beloved community pet! He has lived at Sunrise of Leawood since 2014, and makes a huge difference in the lives of our residents. Duke offers a special kind of constant, judgment-free companionship for our seniors and many of our residents find a sense of purpose while taking care of him.

Rita Altman, a world-renowned expert in Senior Living, says that “Many seniors enjoy feeding a cat or taking a dog for a walk because it gives them a sense of meaning and purpose. Additionally, pets have a wonderful calming effect, which can offer comfort and help ease anxiety”. That’s why all Sunrise Senior Living communities welcome pets, and even allow residents to bring their own furry pals. Our community here in Leawood simply wouldn’t be the same without our beloved canine friend Duke!
