Meet the Sunrise of Leawood Team

Meet some of the excellent team members here at Sunrise of Leawood, KS.

Ryan Wrightleawood-ryan

Executive Director

"Hello my name is Ryan Wright and I am the Executive Director here at Sunrise of Leawood. I have been with Sunrise since 2016. I started as a Reminiscence Supervisor at Sunrise of Overland Park. After completing the Executive Director in Training program, I got the exciting opportunity to join the team at Sunrise of Leawood.

My favorite part about my job is the interactions I get to have every day with our residents, families, and team members. The best part of my job is bringing our Sunrise culture to our current and prospective residents. In my spare time, I enjoy going on hikes with my dogs, spending time with family, and being a full time taco enthusiast."

Michele Tonkin - Leawood DOS

Michele Tonkin

Director of Sales

“Before I knew about Sunrise, I served as my grandmother’s primary caregiver. I placed her in two different senior living communities in Johnson County before I finally found Sunrise. Had I known about Sunrise and the amazing people who work for this company, I would have initially placed her here. There is no comparison in our team members’ dedication to our principles of service and belief in our mission: to champion the quality of life for all seniors. I am proud to say I work at Sunrise!  I am grateful for the opportunity to bring more families to Sunrise on a daily basis.

Since joining the Sunrise team in 2014, I’ve enjoyed interacting with our residents the most. They have so much history to share, and I look forward to seeing each and every one of them daily. I love the Sunrise signatures….particularly our community dog, Duke!”

Annie Lotia, RNleawood-annie

Resident Care Director

"I have worked in geriatrics for many years, serving as the Director of Nursing for 4 years at a memory care and skilled nursing community, as well as working at a few additional long-term care communities.

My favorite part of the job is seeing that our residents are well cared for and satisfied with all of the services we provide. I also love getting to know each and every one of my residents personally, and truly value our friendships.

The best part of working at Sunrise of Leawood is knowing that I have a great team I can always count on. Our team is very supportive, and dedicated to providing the best care possible. When I am not a Sunrise, l like to read and love nothing more than spending time with my family.”

Aneeqa Khan, LNHAleawood-aneeqa

Assisted Living Coordinator

"I have more than 18 years of experience in senior living, serving as the administrator of a long-term care facility. I am passionate about caring for seniors, and my favorite part of the job is making each interaction with my residents meaningful, to help make a difference in their day.

The best part about working for Sunrise is the exceptional teamwork. I am fortunate to be a part of a team where everyone is dedicated to caring for all seniors with the compassion, dignity, and respect they deserve. When I’m not at Sunrise I love to cook and spend time with my family. I also enjoy crafting (sewing, knitting, and crocheting) and watching television in the evenings."

Angela Rushing, LPN | Health Care Manager

Angela Rushing, LPN

Reminiscence Coordinator

“I started at Sunrise in March 2015 as a wellness nurse and took on the role of the Reminiscence Coordinator in November 2015.  I graduated from nursing school in October 2004 and have worked with those living with Alzheimer’s/dementia since that time.

I have such a passion for working with people living with Alzheimer’s/dementia.  I love getting to know each one of my residents and learning from them.  My favorite part of my job is making sure that each day is their best day!

The best part of working at Sunrise is knowing that I touch lives and make a difference every day. In my spare time (though I have very little with five daughters and one granddaughter), I like to listen to music and watch football. Go Steelers!”

Kelly HandleyKelly Handley, MBA

Business Office Coordinator

“I have been with Sunrise of Leawood since September 2003. I started with Sunrise while our community was still in its pre-opening days, which means I watched the community being built from the ground up. This makes me the community historian!

I love all the tasks that my job entails, especially payroll, but my favorite Sunrise “job” is being Duke’s momma! I adopted Duke from Wayside Waifs in 2014 and he has been our community dog ever since. I have always been passionate about working with rescue animals.

The best part of working at Sunrise is getting to serve the greatest generation. Our residents have so much history, life stories, and a great deal of wisdom to pass onto us. One can truly learn so much from our seniors. In my spare time (which I rarely have any!) I love to cook and barbecue. Above all, nothing is more important to me than spending time with my family.”

Mary LangenbergMary Langenberg

Activities and Volunteer Coordinator

“I have more than 23 years of experience working in healthcare, and seniors have always had a special place in my heart. I have spent many years working in assisted living as an Activities Coordinator, as well as years spent at a skilled nursing facility where I was the Social Services Director. I also have experience working with residents on hospice, providing spiritual care.

My favorite part of the job is being with the residents and learning about their lives and all they have experienced. They are a wonderful generation of people and I believe we have a lot to learn from them. The best part about working at Sunrise is the warm feeling of compassion and strong, fulfilling gratitude I experience when spending time with our seniors.

When I am not at Sunrise, I like to spend my time walking Maci (my puppy), watching movies on Netflix, shopping with friends, and volunteering at my church. Of course, there is nothing better than visiting with my children and their families; to me, family is everything!”

John RattermanJohn Ratterman

Dining Services Coordinator

“I joined the Sunrise of Leawood team in 2017, and have more than 34 years of experience in the culinary field. I have worked at many notable restaurants and catering companies, but have always had a special place in my heart for working with seniors. From the freshest ingredients to the unique way we approach each dish, my culinary team crafts the daily menu with our residents’ health and satisfaction in mind.

The best part of my job is watching the residents enjoy each meal we serve, and knowing how my efforts in the kitchen make each and every day better for our seniors. I enjoy getting to know the residents and spending time with them in the dining room. When I am not at Sunrise, I love to relax at home and spend time with my family.”

Tim HodgsonTim Hodgson

Maintenance Coordinator

“I have been a part of the team at Sunrise of Leawood since 2017. Before working at Sunrise I owned my own home repair & remodeling business for 8 years, and have more than 15 additional years of experience working in the maintenance industry.

It is my job to ensure that all of the community facilities are running smoothly every day. My favorite part of the job is spending time with residents and getting to know them. I am thankful for the opportunity to work around our seniors who have so much wisdom and heritage to share with us. When I am not at Sunrise of Leawood I enjoy spending time with my family, watching sports, and participating in outdoor activities. I am also an avid member of my church choir and have always had a passion for music.”

DukeDuke

House Dog

Duke is our beloved community pet! He has lived at Sunrise of Leawood since 2014, and makes a huge difference in the lives of our residents. Duke offers a special kind of constant, judgment-free companionship for our seniors and many of our residents find a sense of purpose while taking care of him.

Rita Altman, a world-renowned expert in Senior Living, says that “Many seniors enjoy feeding a cat or taking a dog for a walk because it gives them a sense of meaning and purpose. Additionally, pets have a wonderful calming effect, which can offer comfort and help ease anxiety”. That’s why all Sunrise Senior Living communities welcome pets, and even allow residents to bring their own furry pals. Our community here in Leawood simply wouldn’t be the same without our beloved canine friend Duke!
