Our dining services coordinator, Larry Collins, has been proudly cooking for seniors for the past 25 years and has been at our community for 12 of those years. He began his culinary career at Orinda Convalescent Hospital, where he was head chef for 11 years. After receiving his Certified Dietary Manager's Certification from Merritt College, he says he chose to work at Sunrise because, "I would be able to showcase my cooking skills and culinary management skills in a great organization whose culinary philosophy revolves around cooking from scratch."
He enjoys working with fresh herbs to bring out flavors and also enjoys preparing salmon dishes which are requested often by residents. When it comes to desserts, his specialty, sweet potato cheesecake is a resident favorite during any special event.
Larry says the most gratifying part of his job is catering a resident’s special event, whether it is a birthday or an anniversary dinner. He loves sitting down with residents and their families and going over their own recipes to plan a special menu just for them. "Seeing the look on residents' faces as they dine with their loved ones over a meal they have personally planned brings me tremendous satisfaction," he says. Larry certainly makes everyday a little more delicious and we feel very lucky to have him on our team!
