The Carlisle provides residents with programming and activities carefully planned to offer each resident ways to enrich their minds, bodies, and spirits. They’ll have opportunities to take part in musical, cultural, spiritual, and life-enriching events. Residents engage in fitness and wellness programs focused on improving vitality, endurance, strength, flexibility, and circulation.
Residents enjoy movies in The Carlisle’s Cinema equipped with surround sound. You’ll engage with your neighbors at planned social gatherings in the Grand Room. Many residents enjoy planned outings to San Francisco’s most popular sites, including the San Francisco Opera and Symphony, and Grace Cathedral.
Art class: A two-hour class every week for beginners and proficient artists alike to learn new techniques. Instructors have at least a BFA, most of them an MFA. All supplies are provided.
Writers Workshop: led by Elaine Elinson, author, editor, and communications consultant, her work has been published in The Nation, San Francisco Chronicle, The Daily Journal, Rocky Mountain News, Poets and Writers, Svenska Dagbladet (Sweden) and other newspapers and magazines. Residents meet once a month to work on their own poems, short stories and memoirs.
Current Events Discussion
Political discussion groups: Are held at least once a week. Facilitators include:
Eric Gattmann, Professor Emeritus of World Affairs at the College of San Mateo
John Rothmann: formerly on KGO, a frequent lecturer on American politics and the Presidency, and has spoken at over 150 campuses throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel
Tom Berry, The Carlisle’s executive director, hosts a fireside chat once a month. With a degree in Political Science from George Washington University, interned on Capitol Hill and brings his passion for politics, specifically relating to aging issues, to The Carlisle.
Games: Held several days a week. Word games, crossword puzzles, trivia (covering a range of subjects; science, the arts, geography, history, lyrics from old songs, etc…), to improve concentration and enhance recall.
Lectures on opera, ballet, and art by Adela Roatcap, PhD, art historian and teacher at The Fromm.
Beginners Spanish Class: learn a new language! Class is taught by the activities assistant, who is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese
French Conversation: led by Activities coordinator, fluent in French, & former French teacher.
The Carlisle provides at least two, sometimes three activities every day to promote physical wellbeing:
Morning exercise classes: Yoga, Cardio exercises, strength training, t’ai chi, all led by highly experienced instructors
For enhanced balance and coordination, try our bi-weekly “balance and fitness” class, and weekly line dancing in the afternoons
Walking group excursions for all levels (from neighborhood walks, within six blocks of The Carlisle, at a leisurely pace, to visits to Ocean Beach or the Embarcadero, etc…)
Fitness center open 24hours a day, 7 days a week, with a personal fitness trainer available twice a week.
Champagne Brunch every Sunday, featuring a dazzling buffet for residents, friends and family
Themed cocktail hours twice a month, with full bar, appetizers, live music (typically jazz and classical)
Sunday concerts: at least twice a month, we host local musicians for classical programs, solos, duets or trios. Most are graduates of the SF Conservatory of music.
Special interest groups meet throughout the month, and bring together residents with similar hobbies for socialization. Some example:
Japanese Club: each month a new theme is brought up; calligraphy, childhood memories, Japanese food, etc…
Theater Club: full length plays with large casts, usually comedies, are read out loud.
The Carlisle Canaries: an informal singing group, covering holiday songs, Cole Porter, The Beatles, and much more. Resident pianist sets the tone.
The Gay-Straight Alliance: A group of gay and straight residents discuss personal stories, current political issues and topics that affect everyone.
Excursions: Frequent trips to local theaters and museums, flower shows and shopping centers and many cultural events in San Francisco
