Sunrise of Wilmette, IL
I truly enjoy seeing the residents succeed in activities, and renew their hope, importance and purpose in life. There is a mutual sense of friendship, trust, learning and a closeness that develops from supporting them in their times of happiness and sadness.

Kathie is a retired Chicago public school teacher who had the rewarding experience of teaching children with special needs for more than 30 years. Upon retiring, she searched for an opportunity to bring joy to others and began volunteering at Sunrise of Wilmette which turned into a position as a Life Enrichment Manager.

Kathie says that greeting the residents in the morning is an amazing experience and that she is rewarded every day with smiles. “A resident who is in need of someone to talk to is listened to. Someone who seems sad or confused is comforted. And someone who is happy shares an experience or teaches me something new.”

Kathie says the best compliment she has received comes from a resident who introduces her to visitors by saying, “I would like you to meet my friend!” Kathie says the feeling is more than mutual.
