Sunrise Innovation and Growth: A Letter from Chris Winkle, CEO

Chris Winkle, Chief Executive Officer  |  April 21, 2014

April 2014  Dear Family & Friends of Sunrise:  As Sunrise’s new chief executive officer, I’m pleased to update you on our great organization. Recently, we closed the previously announced ownership change with Health Care REIT increasing their interest in Sunrise to 24%. The remainder is owned by Revera Inc., one of Canada’s leading providers of seniors’ accommodations, care and services. Importantly, our long-standing mission and commitment to provide the highest quality of care in our communities remains unchanged. Our residents, families and partners should continue to expect the very best from Sunrise today and every day moving forward.

With this new ownership group, Sunrise is well-positioned to continue to look for opportunities to innovate and grow. I am proud to lead one of the most experienced and passionate teams in the industry who know what it takes to fulfill the important promises we make to the families we serve. We are firmly focused on driving quality and performance improvement in all that we do, and have many initiatives under way to make certain that the core processes within Sunrise translate to consistent, superior care delivery to benefit our residents. Our team is also looking at development opportunities to bring the Sunrise Signature Experience to even more people. And, all of this work is guided by the Principles of Service that have led this company since Paul and Terry Klaassen opened the very first Sunrise community in 1981.
My background includes 30 years of operational experience in health services and post-acute care. Prior to joining Sunrise, I served as the chief executive officer for MedQuest, Inc., and before that, Mariner Health Care, Inc., a long-term health care company with more than 250 skilled nursing facilities throughout the U.S. In addition to my professional work, I’ve served as a caregiver for my dad for the last 10 years and understand first-hand the importance of using teamwork and communication to coordinate services that truly benefit those that you serve.
I see this teamwork throughout Sunrise – it is inherent in our great culture and evident in every smile you see in our communities. I’m inspired each day being surrounded by a team so committed to doing the right thing to benefit our residents, and I look forward to continuing to work with them to bring you the very best in personalized care and service.
On behalf of the entire Sunrise team, thank you for your trust and support. It is an honor to champion the quality of life for all seniors.
Chris Winkle
