3 Delicious Fresh Fruit Dessert Recipes

This summer, don't over indulge in chocolate treats. Give these fresh fruit dessert recipes a try! 

Fresh fruit makes a perfect snack, but it can also be turned into a delicious dessert. Choosing to eat a fresh fruit dessert isn't only a tasty option – it comes with a number of health benefits too! According to MyPlate, an initiative of the United States Department of Agriculture, most fruits are low in fat, sodium and calories. They're also great sources of potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C and folate. These vital nutrients can help you maintain a healthy weight, blood pressure and cholesterol level, and can also reduce your risk of multiple chronic diseases.

Instead of eating sugary chocolate treats, consider one of these delicious and healthy fresh fruit desserts!

1. Broiled Plums with Mascarpone Cream
This recipe courtesy of Martha Stewart Living takes the sweetness of plums and balances it out with the richness of the cream.

Ingredients:

  • 5 medium black plums – halved and pitted
  • 3 Tbsp. brandy
  • 6 Tbsp. packed light-brown sugar
  • 1/4 mascarpone cheese
  • 1/4 heavy cream

Directions:

First, head over to the oven and preheat your broiler. Grab an 8-inch square baking dish and place plums – skin side down – in a single layer. Evenly pour the brandy over the plums and sprinkle 1/4 cup of your brown sugar on top. Place plums into the oven and broil until sugar caramelizes – this should take about 10 minutes, but keep an eye on them to prevent accidental burning. Remove from oven and set aside.

In a medium bowl, beat mascarpone cheese, cream and remaining brown sugar with an electric mixer until peaks form – this should take about two minutes.

Grab a few bowls and fill with plums, then top with whipped mascarpone cream.

2. Nectarine and Strawberry Parfait
Eating Well magazine's recipe makes a decadent, yet simple sweet treat to enjoy with your friends.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup sweet white wine
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 ripe nectarines – thinly sliced
  • 2 cups strawberries – hulled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt

Directions:

In a small sauce pan, bring wine and honey to a boil over medium heat until reduced to 1/2 cup – this should take anywhere from 6 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine nectarines and strawberries with prepared 1/4 cup wine syrup until fruits are fully coated. Place remaining wine syrup in the fridge.

In another medium bowl, beat whipping cream until peaks form. Fold in yogurt and cooled wine syrup until just combined.

Grab dessert glasses and scoop 1/4 cup yogurt into each. Top with 1/2 cup fruit mixture, then repeat process to create a second layer. Serve and enjoy by the pool!

3. Fruit Pops

Raspberry Pops
This sweet and simple popsicle is sure to cool you down on a warm summer's day.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups fresh raspberries
  • 1 cup raspberry juice
  • 2 Tbsp. light corn syrup

Directions:

Place 1 1/2 cups raspberries, raspberry juice and corn syrup in a blender. Puree mixture until it reaches a smooth consistency. Add remaining raspberries and fold evenly into the puree.

Pour mixture into popsicle molds or paper cups. Cover with tin foil and place a popsicle stick in the middle of each mold. Let freeze for at least 3 hours before serving.

Mint-Melon Pops
This recipe combines the sweetness of fruit with the refreshment of mint.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups cantaloupe chunks
  • 1 Tbsp. orange juice
  • 1 1/2 cups honeydew chunks
  • 1 Tbsp. limeade concentrate – thawed
  • 2 mint leaves

Directions:

Place cantaloupe chunks and orange juice in a blender and puree until it reaches a smooth consistency. Pour into paper cups or popsicle molds and place in freezer to set until just firm. Rinse out blender to prepare for next combination.

Puree the honeydew, limeade concentrate and mint until smooth. Grab the molds from the freezer and top first layer with honeydew mixture. Cover and let freeze for at least 3 hours before serving!
