Tasty Summer Salads That Hydrate

July is typically one of the hottest months of the summer in many areas of the country. While most people enjoy outdoor activities, such as picnicking, family parties, swimming, and gardening, it’s important to do so wisely. And to be aware that the risk for dehydration increases on hot and humid days, especially for older adults.

For reasons ranging from medication side effects to the body’s inability to regulate heat as one grows older, seniors need to take precautions to stay hydrated. Consuming water is one of the best ways you can do that. But if you don’t like water or have trouble drinking enough of it, there are other options to consider. One of them is to find a few favorite salads that contain ingredients with a high-water content, such as lettuce, cucumbers, celery, and fruit.

We’ve assembled a list of hydrating summer salads that you can explore and enjoy.

7 Hydrating Salads for Seniors to Enjoy This Summer

For many people, the term “salad” conjures up images of a bowl of mixed, leafy greens with some additional vegetables added. But salads can be so much more. Here are some ideas you can use to help your summer menus improve hydration:

1. Tropical Cucumber Salad: This tasty treat combines the flavors of cucumber with avocado, mango, and a salty-sweet homemade dressing. For added protein, grill and slice some chicken breast.

2. Kale and Apple Salad: If you prefer a light lunch during summer months, this is one to consider. Apples, kale, and dates topped with a lemon dressing is a flavorful combination that also helps to keep you hydrated.

3. Hydrating Watermelon Salad: On its own watermelon has a high-water content. When you add cucumber, it pumps the hydration up even more. This recipe also includes onion, black olives, mint, and manuka honey.

4. Tropical Fruit Summer Salad: Another great addition to a summer menu is this combination of several varieties of melons and berries, in addition to peaches, pineapple, and grapes. Each of these fruity ingredients will help a senior stay hydrated.

5. Seared Salmon, Watercress, and Potato Salad: This hydrating salad is also heart healthy. It contains salmon, baby potatoes, kalamata olives, along with radishes, watercress, and lettuce. Great for dinner or brunch.

6. Waldorf Salad: Light and refreshing on a humid summer day, this recipe is a classic. With ingredients that include chicken, celery, apples, grapes, and cheese. Top it with a poppyseed dressing.

7. Honey Mustard Chicken Salad with Bacon and Avocado: A hearty salad, this one is also hydrating and delicious. Romaine, avocado, cherry tomatoes, onion, and corn are a great complement to honey mustard marinaded chicken.
