A Q&A with Marty Damian, Sr. Director of Care

Sunrise Senior Living  |  May 6, 2015

Meet our new Senior Director of Care, Marty Damian. After chatting with Marty we were enlightened to his dedication to senior care and the reason he loves working for Sunrise Senior Living. Read about Marty’s background, his leadership style, and the greatest lesson he has learned from working with seniors.

What is your career background and how did you get into the senior care industry?
I have close to 20 years of experience in the senior care industry. I started working for a Boston-based organization as a “finance guy.” Over time, I was given the opportunity to partner with our Operations team as a nursing assistant, during which time I learned all about why we do what we do. I realized that I enjoyed the care side of things, so I shifted my focus to Operations and never looked back. Since that time, I spent a number of years focusing on performance and process improvement activities with a goal of giving time back to our caregivers which gives more personal time to our residents. I think that my journey in the senior care profession has helped me to realize that by putting people first, we get the best results.

What do you think sets Sunrise apart in the senior care industry?
The passion and determination of our team members is amazing to be a part of! It is about expanding ourselves beyond just getting to know residents; it is about being part of a very large extended family. Our Sunrise family includes residents, team members and all the family members we interact with each day. For me, taking care of “family” is one of the most important things I can do.

How would you describe your leadership style?
The phrase “lead by example” comes to mind. We need to work together to improve each resident’s journey through the senior living process. We should never just say “here you go” to anything, and I feel it is my responsibility to show team members what I am expecting of them. That may be via conversation, but being out in the communities and modeling these expectations is how we get better outcomes.

Describe Sunrise in five words or less.
Always looking to be better!

What’s the greatest lesson you have learned from working with seniors?
The simplest interaction with a resident may result in the biggest smile, hug or feeling that people genuinely do care.

What are you most looking forward to in 2015?
As a new team member to Sunrise, I am excited to visit with our communities and partner with our regional teams.  Interactions with others are what motivate me and keep me enjoying what I do!

What do you like to do for fun?
I can find a Dunkin Donuts just about anywhere in the country. I am training for a marathon walk in September, so my exercise routine is stepping up! And who doesn’t root for the Boston Red Sox?
