This self-guided study was prepared to help caregivers understand their loved ones' world with Alzheimer's disease and to make communication more meaningful and joyful. The Journey of Discovery program builds on a body of work called Validation, developed by Naomi Feil, M.S., A.C.S.W. The Validation approach has been used successfully to build bridges to those with Alzheimer's disease.
Validation is an empathetic method of comunicating and helping disoriented adults. Validation techniques can help disoriented elderly to express what they wish to express whether it is verbal or nonverbal communication, help the person express suppressed feelings, often reduce the intesity of the feelings - making care easier, and help the person communicate more and be less likely to withdraw.
