Using Respite as a Trial Stay for Assisted Living

Older adults are sometimes reluctant to transition to an assisted living community, no matter how beneficial such a move might be. Their reluctance can be caused by a variety of reasons. For some, it is a fear of losing their independence. Others might have difficulty accepting change. Another common concern that holds them back is the idea of selling their home..

Even when a senior understands they might not be safe living alone, they resist making a change. For those who love them, it can be frustrating and worrisome.

One solution to consider is using short-term respite as a trial stay. Respite is a program that allows older adults to stay at a community for a few days or weeks. The program is designed to give family caregivers a break.

Utilizing respite as a trial stay may be a nonthreatening way for your family elder to test out the community before committing to a permanent move. There are a few factors you’ll want to keep in mind as you plan.

Respite Allows Seniors to Try Assisted Living

Several factors to consider when you are using respite care to test out an assisted living community:

  • Timing: Work with the care team at the assisted living community to carefully schedule your family member’s visit. Plan their trial stay for a time when events and activities are happening that your family member enjoys. If you share your loved one’s interests and hobbies with the staff, they can make the most of the time they have. Team members will be able to introduce your senior loved one to current residents who have similar backgrounds and interests.
  • Have an end date: Be sure you book a trial stay with an end date. Reassure your family member that this is just an opportunity to try out the community, and there is no obligation to move. Knowing this is a temporary stay will likely help them to relax and enjoy their time.
  • Personalize the respite suite: Most assisted living communities have furnished suites or apartments that are used for respite guests. While they are usually very attractive, you’ll want to make it feel more like home. Pack a few of the senior’s favorite belongings, such as family photos, a comfortable throw for the couch, and some of their favorite crafts or board games. You’ll want to bring enough of their own things so the environment looks and feels familiar.
  • Visit ahead of time: It will also help if you visit the community ahead of time. You and your family member can take a tour, and stay for an activity or meal. This may take some of the uncertainty out of their upcoming respite stay.
