On March 8, Sunrise Senior Living and other organizations around the world joined forces to shine the spotlight on International Women’s Day (IWD). This awareness day encourages all people to celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias, and take action for equality, according to the IWD website.
History of International Women’s Day
Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been celebrated in March. The first commemoration events were held in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Over one million women and men marched to end gender-based discrimination.
In 2011, a full century after the first IWD was held, President Barack Obama declared the entire month of March to be Women’s History Month. The president encouraged all Americans to pause and reflect on the “extraordinary accomplishments of women in shaping our nation’s history.”
