6 Senior-Friendly Tablets

The isolation many may experience due to expanded social distancing and infection control protocols amidst the COVID-19 pandemic has required families to solve challenges they might never have considered before. From where to order face masks to how to have groceries delivered to a senior’s home, loved ones have had to learn a lot about a new way of living. Additionally, finding new ways to virtually connect with aging family members when in-person visits aren’t possible as become very important.

In trying to remain connected, many families have found the need for an older adult to have a tablet or other device that is easy for them to master. Fortunately, there are a variety of options at budget-friendly prices for the tablets for seniors.

The GrandPad System

The first suggestion is a tablet designed exclusively for the seniors. GrandPad is simple to use, but offers many benefits. The system is intuitive and makes it easy for the user to video chat, check email, play games, surf the Internet, and more.

The system works off cellular service so no Wi-Fi is required. Depending on usage, the battery can last up to 3 days. If the battery life falls below 10 percent, the system can be programmed to email or call the senior to notify them.

Tablets for Seniors

  • Microsoft Surface Pro 5: A large screen and optional keyboard help make this tablet a good choice for seniors. It also has a built-in kickstand on the back that makes it easy for older adults to use. The Surface Pro 5 utilizes Windows 10 technology, which is more user-friendly than previous versions of Windows.
  • Lenovo Tab 4: For seniors who want the ease of using a voice assistant, the Lenovo Tab 4 comes with Alexa. Enhanced audio combined with the hands-free use of Alexa make this affordable tablet less difficult than others to master. The 15-hour battery life is another perk.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A: Samsung is known for tablets that offer a user-friendly interface. Seniors will also appreciate the simple home screen, the light weight, and the available voice assistant (Bixby). Ease Mode also allows items on the screen to be enlarged, making viewing better for older eyes.

iPads for Older Adults

Many people find Apple products to be the easiest to use. They allow a senior to FaceTime with family, order groceries online, or check in with friends on social media. Because iPads can work off home Wi-Fi, they are a cost-effective option. After the initial investment, there are no additional monthly fees.

While there are various iPad models at a range of price points, here are a few that earn high marks for seniors:

  • Apple iPad Mini 2: This affordable tablet comes with the features that make iPads so popular with older adults. Specifically, Siri voice assistant, Apple iPad hearing aid compatibility, the ability to enlarge display size, and HD Retina Display with high pixel density for the visually impaired.
  • Apple iPad Pro 9.7: Like the mini, this easy-to-use tablet is lightweight and offers a crisp screen which is friendlier on aging eyes. The device is also compatible with both the Apple pencil and keyword cover. For those with arthritis or another condition that affects hand dexterity, these can be useful tools.
