Meet the Sunrise of Chevy Chase Team

kathy edKathy Tyler

Executive Director

In 2005, while searching for a community for her father who was living with dementia, Kathy visited Sunrise and fell in love with the Reminiscence neighborhood. A few months later, she was offered a job at Sunrise of Pikesville, MD. With her extensive background in sales and marketing, she joined the team as the director of sales with the singular mission of making a difference in the lives of seniors.

Kathy then transitioned to the executive director role at Sunrise a Montgomery Village, before accepting the same position at the new Sunrise of Chevy Chase community.

Since starting at Sunrise, Kathy has found a way to help a resident, family member, guest, or volunteer each day, which she finds very fulfilling.

In her spare time, Kathy is a mother to five children and grandmother to six grandchildren. She loves spending time with her family and occasionally taking a cruise vacation.

salome alcSalome Atapagrem

Assisted Living Coordinator

"I have worked at Sunrise since 2009 and have served in my current position since 2013. I’ve worked as a life enrichment manager, a Terrace Club coordinator, and I am a validation therapy trainer. I enjoy spending time with residents and seeing how we all affect their lives.

The best part of working at Sunrise is all the training that is offered to better equip us to help our residents.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two boys and watching movies.”

rena atkinson rcRena Atkinson

Reminiscence Coordinator

"I began my career at Sunrise in July of 2017. My experience in the senior care field has spanned over a 13-year period, and I consider it an honor and a privilege to continue my service here at Sunrise.

As Reminiscence Coordinator, I have the opportunity to enrich the lives of our Alzheimer’s and Dementia residents by ensuring that their everyday lives are full, meaningful, and purposeful. I accomplish this by embracing and implementing the Sunrise Principles of Service and Core Values which I’ve found to be quite valuable as I begin my Sunrise career.

The best part of working at Sunrise is seeing on a daily basis how the training that Sunrise invests in its team members translate into our ability to better serve and care for our residents.

I am a huge fan of professional tennis, and in my spare time, I also enjoy interior decorating."

catherin rcdCatherine Njuguna

Resident Care Director

Catherine had been a nurse at Sunrise at Montgomery Village since July of 2006 until her move to Sunrise of Chevy Chase in 2017. Before joining Sunrise, she worked as a nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD.

Catherine says her favorite part of her job is having the privilege to care for our residents during difficult times in their lives. For the residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, she appreciates being able to travel on their journey with them. According to Catherine, the team environment is what sets Sunrise apart. The residents and families know and trust that they have made the best decision in allowing Sunrise to care for their loved one.

During her spare time, Catherine loves to spend time with her family and children, cook, and volunteer in the children's ministry at her church.

victoria cain avcVictoria Cain

Activities & Volunteer Coordinator

"I have worked with the senior population since 1990 in many different positions, but my favorite job has been working in activities. Even when I decided to stay home for a few years to raise my boys and take care of my ailing mother, I always stayed involved with seniors. In fact my first experience with Sunrise, was as a weekly volunteer in the activities department leading a reminiscence group.

When I returned to working full time, I knew I wanted to work with seniors and began working with Sunrise, at Maplewood Park Place, for about three years in the Human Resources and Accounting Department. I missed working directly with the residents in activities though, and left to work as an activities director in another community. I missed working for Sunrise, and was referred by a friend to the AVC position at the Sunrise of Chevy Chase. I am happy to be part of the Sunrise family again. I enjoy working for such a well-run company. My favorite thing is their mission statement “to champion the quality of life for all seniors”, while nurturing their mind, body and spirit.

I am a very social person and enjoying spending time with family and friends. I love cooking, reading, going to museums, walking and spending time outdoors, and most of all dancing. Fortunately, I get to share these hobbies and passions with the seniors I work with every day."

michele chevy dscMichele M. Lee

Dining Services Coordinator

"I joined the Sunrise team in January of 2019.  My favorite part of my role here is cooking for the residents and getting to know them on a personal level – learning each residents taste and giving them the best food I possibly can so I see that smile every day.

In my free time, I love to watch Golden Girls, ride motorcycles, and race cars."
